A gathering where currents of knowledge converge

We Are Turning Summit of the Bay II into a Free Online Learning Experience.

The Summit of the Bay

For tens of thousands of years, Passamaquoddy Bay was a place of abundance and natural balance.

But the diversity of species, habitats, and populations have been diminished to a point where it threatens the stability of the ecosystem of which we are part, and on which we depend.

It is possible to turn things around, but it’s going to take passionate people speaking out, acting on the kind of change that is needed.

To that end, the Peskotomuhkati Nation at Skutik has hosted two summits: Summit of the Bay I in 2022 and Summit of the Bay II in 2024, bringing together Elders, knowledge keepers, scientists, and local knowledge holders in order to bring awareness and inspire action.

Summit of the Bay II consisted of presentations that offer a variety of perspectives on the state of our homeland’s past and present aquatic ecosystems, and actions to assist in restoring our homeland.

Start by watching this essential video, “Samaqan–Water–We Are All Connected,” which was created for the Summit of the Bay II in 2024 in order to give expression to the priorities of the Peskotomuhkati Nation in 2025, going forward.

A special acknowledgment from the organizing committee must go to the Peskotomuhkati Nation and neighbouring Indigenous communities of the Wabanaki, whose traditional knowledge and stewardship of the ecosystem continue to expand our consciousness for what is possible. Their deep connection to the land and sea offers invaluable insights that, when combined with Western science, help us address the complexities of our times.

We also thank the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for contributing their time, presence, and knowledge to our increasingly collaborative endeavour.
